Overview
The Crown of Newport is one of the hidden gems of the Bilgola 500: a steep, sheltered gully that links Newport with Bilgola Plateau, forces runners into the bush, and quietly reminds everyone that this course was not designed for convenience.
On the Bilgola 500, it works as both scenery and punishment. There is creek, trail, canopy, uneven footing, and just enough climbing to make the course feel properly earned before the next section begins.
History and Significance
Northern Beaches Council describes Crown of Newport Reserve as a sheltered gully between Newport Beach and Bilgola Plateau. It supports four vegetation types and a range of native animals, including threatened powerful owls.
The reserve is also recognised for winter-flowering spotted gums, which provide an important food resource for species such as sugar gliders and ring-tailed possums.
