Fresh off the skateboard and into trail running, Andy spent 2025 sizing up the competition from behind the camera — offering endless encouragement to his future rivals, if only he could snag an entry.

A change to the rules opened the loophole he needed. The inaugural recipient of the 2025 Spirit of the Bilgola 500 Award was in.

The Handicap Committee did its best to level the field, but Andy was too strong. He flew. He chased. He hunted. He embodied everything the Bilgola 500 Pursuit represents — always with a smile on his face and encouragement for those around him.

A thoroughly deserving champion. Congratulations, Andy. 👑

Description

The original 500 Over 10 event: an urban trail pursuit designed to squeeze a savage amount of climbing, chaos and tactical handicapping into one compact format.

Origins

Born from the 'Bilgola 500' lockdown project, then converted into a reverse-handicap race so everyone had a theoretical chance of glory.

Race History

The race became a handicapped pursuit so every runner had a chance at glory, while still being hunted down by the faster nutters behind them.

Why This Race Exists

From Course to Event

The Bilgola 500 began as a lockdown-forged running loop: 10 kilometres, 500 metres of climbing, and just enough navigational trickery to make it feel like a bad idea worth repeating.

The Handicap Idea

Turning it into a race required a different kind of madness. The reverse handicap format was created so every runner had a theoretical shot at glory — and every faster runner had someone to hunt.

In 2025, Paul “Raw Dog” McBride played his hand to perfection: hunting down five runners, holding off a late challenge from dark horse Kimbo, and sliding across the line in the closest finish in B500P history. First across the line, Michael “The People’s Champ” Brannigan, was later revealed to have beaten his allowed time by 14 seconds. With the DQ confirmed, the cup, the glory and the coffee orders belonged to Paul.

George “The Growler” Mortram

The inaugural event will forever be etched into Bilgola Plateau history. Across the valleys, hills and plateaus of this beautiful stretch of Australian coastline, the growls of George “The Growler” Mortram could be heard echoing, terrorising fellow runners and breaking spirits. His strategy was simple: stay out of sight of Brynn to break him psychologically, while making himself heard — and felt — by the runners he was hunting. Nobody has ever wanted the trophy as badly as the course co-founder, and the glory rightly belonged to him.
